a new phase in life

June 29th, 2010 (01:18 am)
current location: edimburgo
current mood: accomplished
current song: empire state of mind (yes, still listening to this)

hello my long neglected blog!

congratulations Dr Lee..! but just call me "Matt" as always.
phew! medical school is over. and it is now just the beginning.
a new phase in life. working life. even more independence. i want my mum & dad!
can't wait to get my first pay check! hmmm.. what to spend it on?
iphone4? htc?

holidays are usually a good time for me to step outside routines & reorganise life.
some of my friends are no longer golf virgins. foong. clement. anan. keat. hohoho.
good holiday so far! some more firsts in this holiday:
played (mini) golf on brunstfield links for the first time! wanted to do this 5 years ago since i arrived in edinburgh.
joined my first spanish conversational meetup group today! wanted to do this few years ago.
tried first capoiera lesson ever today! yes, also wanted to do this a year back!
first go-karting experience! it's scary being suddenly knocked from behind.. but not as scary to knock someone from behind!
auntie anne is right, never put off anything, enjoy each moment.
glad to have good friends to share these moments with.

thank you father, for peace of mind. give me a pure heart.
please help me not be homeless any longer for july & august.

also this holiday, i learned to really appreciate having a roof over my head & a place to stay.
perhaps i'd taken this for granted over the last 5 years.

had the urge to travel faraway & exciting this holiday, but have not yet made plans! *sigh* my last minute-ness..
might still go somewhere in july, hopefully i might find a suitable travel buddy
although i've travelled alone plenty before too in new york & beijing!

thanks auntie anne for the beautiful message below, for new doctors:
(oops can't paste it here somehow). here's a link to it:

halfway around the world

April 26th, 2009 (08:41 pm)

we all have our comfort zones, being at the same places & doing the same habits we are used to. after a while, we get lazy, habitual, bored, daydream...

i would love to get out of my comfort zone, go somewhere new, perhaps somewhere on the other side of the world, and do something different for a change. how nice that would be. anyway, see, that's me daydreaming...

however, i'm already very lucky to have done much traveling recently.. to turkey, paris, london, switzerland!

btw, what's the messiest thing i know? - me eating a subway

another messy thing.. my head? my room? cleared my room today, all in a day's work! never underestimate the power of one day.

ps: this blog is inspired by foong, thanks!

bday wishlist

March 6th, 2009 (02:28 pm)

planning on getting a mac computer... what are advantages of mac over pc? is it worth the hassle making the change? then i can get an ipod to link up with it! then the iphone, then become an i-dot. my old computer has memory problems, just like me.

happy birthday to everyone who is born in the lovely month of march!

i'm going to be cheeky & put down my birthday wishlist! (no one reads my blog anyway)

1) elbow pads
2) cool shades that actually block out dangerous rays (i'm wary of wearing the 'fake' one bought from pisa)
3) many hugs & kisses (i can't get too many of these!)

i'm a happy bunny!

my life so far

November 9th, 2008 (02:00 am)

current mood: bouncy

the other day i met this lady coming out of the flat 2 blocks from mine in Edinburgh. she also happens to be the Guiness World Record holder for female with most piercings. perhaps she is my neighbour. check this out:
actually, she IS MY NEIGHBOUR! she lives in Edinburgh & Elaine also performs in the Edinburgh Festival, and she is a nurse too!

talking about nurses, working in the nurse bank has been a very good eye-opening experience for me, to learn the true meaning of Quality of Life, and how to appreciate good health and youth! a few lessons:
- knock & close your eyes when you enter a lady's room! (advice from a female patient)
- i now know that i do not wish to survive from a stroke because of the burden i would be for my carers (if i have any). i would rather die of a stroke.
- old people are cute
- old people are funny
- (some) old people are out of it (sometimes)
on a serious note, i really respect nurses who devote years or decades of their lives serving people, it takes so much patience and energy to care and this is especially difficult when patients do not or cannot show appreciation.

Bboy Wing won the Red Bull BC One 2008 contest few days ago! but i like Hong10 much better... he is one of my heroes with Tiger Woods & Lang Lang!

chopin is bored

September 13th, 2008 (04:53 pm)

current mood: bored

a Border's adventure:

me & my ex-housemate Shiying were cooking in Borders, and we were looking for a chopping board to cut our onions but couldn't find one! whilst cooking we saw a piece of plastic with a picture of Chopin looking very bored at his piano. hmm interesting, wonder what this is for... days later after a few rounds of cooking did we finally realise Chopin Bored = Chopping Board!!!

Happy 21st birthday!

September 9th, 2008 (06:17 pm)

current mood: contemplative

Happy 21st birthday Jennifer Lua! phweet look at u now lady ;P

Here's some random birthday quotes I like:

Sooner or later we all discover that the important moments in life are not the advertised ones, not the birthdays, the graduations, the weddings, not the great goals achieved. The real milestones are less prepossessing. They come to the door of memory unannounced, stray dogs that amble in, sniff around a bit and simply never leave. Our lives are measured by these. -- Susan B. Anthony

It is lovely, when I forget all birthdays, including my own, to find that somebody remembers me. -- Ellen Glasgow

Middle age is when you've met so many people that every new person you meet reminds you of someone else. -- Ogden Nash

Old age isn't so bad when you consider the alternative. -- Maurice Chevalier

this one i'll keep in mind in future:
The Best way to remember your wife's birthday is to forget it once. -- H. V. Prochnow

June 28th, 2008 (04:46 am)

my Nokia 6300 handphone
my Canon IXUS 950IS camera (best in the world)

June 19th, 2008 (02:40 am)

current mood: tired

moving house 2 wks ago was a task. i'm very grateful to flower monster for her help in the monster task of moving & clearing. thanks! we worked hard until about 5am the day i had to finish clearing up for my flight at 7am!

i have a big problem. i am a collector of things. u won't believe the things i collect:
plastic bags
empty bottles
empty containers
empty boxes
receipts, used tickets
A4 paper (used)
tissue paper (not used)
LOTS & LOTS of them... jus ask my housemates...
n these things help me collect dust

some things perhaps more worthwhile collecting:
pics & vids
wall maps
printed lecture notes
hundreds of golf swing vids?

i collected >500 Youtube Favourite videos... 500 is the max... I have to stop Favouriting everything...

i managed to stop collecting:
long finger nails
expired products
empty printer cartridges

just cleared me & my bro's room back home. we agreed that certain ppl have certain types of mess:
dad's mess: little mess - he doesn't collect things as much
mom's mess: neat mess - she piles up her mess in neat stacks (mostly brochures which she doesn't read)
me & bro's mess: hidden mess - we throw our mess into our cupboards to hide the mess outside
sis' mess: no mess

conclusion: live life simple
more doesn't always mean better
more things less space
more things more worry
...need to stop collecting!...
...and start giving!... :)
or recycling.

my house moving is complete, but i return to edinburgh with a room full of things to sort out and start hiding, yes, hidden mess.

if only collecting knowledge is as easy as collecting things...

ups & downs

June 19th, 2008 (12:18 am)

current mood: relaxed

what do u call a Chinese born and bred in the UK? = a BBC (British born Chinese)
what do u get when u mix an European with an Asian? = an Eurasian
what do u get when u mix a black man with an Asian woman?

= Tiger Woods

no offense to anyone.

in the most recent US Open, Tiger Woods showed why he is the best in the world. despite knee pain post-surgery, and the pressure of having his records broken by an underdog, he fought 91 holes and won with a ONE stroke difference. imagine that, a ONE stroke difference after 5 days of hard work. there were many ups & downs in the game which made it so dramatic as the victory could have swung either way many times. worth it waking up at 3am in the morning to watch! uncle david (consultant O&G) called me at midnight to watch the game, n i felt like i was his golfing friend!

ever since taking up golf, Tiger Woods is my favourite golfer. i also like Michelle Wie.

here are some of my favourite highs:
- hitting a solid drive that lands on the fairway
- scoring a 3-pointer
- meeting an old friend after a long time
- making a new friend
- recognising a foreign language spoken
- completing a race, a book, a lesson, a piano piece
- alcohol (unnatural high)
- cheating Tesco with their own deals
- almost missing the bus and then managing to catch it
- killing someone in Warcraft DOTA (rare)
- taking a really nice photograph and showing it off
- finding the toilet in time

highs for the near future:
- do a windmill
- do a handstand that lasts forever
- play Chopin's Revolutionary Etude
- get a single digit golf handicap

highs for the distant future (order may vary):
- be a dr
- be a husband
- be a father

- go to USA
- go to Canada
- go to Japan
